楊開(kāi)慧出生于知識(shí)分子之家，從小受到良好的教育?？茖W(xué)與民主的新思想使她成為一個(gè)進(jìn)步的“新女性”。她不顧來(lái)自各方的勸阻，與毛澤東相知相戀?；楹螅龍?jiān)定地支持毛澤東的革命工作，在白色恐怖下，協(xié)助毛澤東為黨做了大量工作。1930年冬，楊開(kāi)慧不幸被捕。在獄中，她面對(duì)敵人的嚴(yán)刑拷打，寧死不屈。
本片以楊開(kāi)慧被捕至犧牲為第一時(shí)空，描述了這位堅(jiān)貞不屈的烈士最后二十天的生活；同時(shí)又以楊開(kāi)慧烈士對(duì)自己一生的回憶為第二時(shí)空，表現(xiàn)了這位崇高女性29年短暫而光輝的經(jīng)歷。兩個(gè)時(shí)空有機(jī)交錯(cuò)，塑造了一個(gè)真實(shí)、生動(dòng)、感人，獨(dú)特而卓越的女性形象。
