根據(jù)一次世界大戰(zhàn)的真實故事改編而成。影片講述了在震驚世界的帕斯尚爾戰(zhàn)役期間，一對戀人的不幸遭遇。歷史上的帕斯尚爾戰(zhàn)役，于1917年7月31日爆發(fā)，一直持續(xù)到11月6日，交戰(zhàn)雙方英國和德國經歷了長達四個多月的拉鋸戰(zhàn)。英軍期望攻占比利時的帕斯尚爾，以摧毀德軍設在該地的潛水艇基地，結果在攻守之間，萬眾將士斃命——盟軍32.5萬人傷亡，德軍26萬人傷亡，這場慘烈無比的戰(zhàn)爭，最后以英軍攻占帕斯尚爾宣告結束。影片拍攝周期長達兩年。
